Therapeutic Paws of Canada (TPOC) is a non-profit organization of volunteers providing animal resources for human needs (physical, mental, educational, motivational, socialization) through regular visits to hospitals, residences, schools, etc. TPOC's acclaimed Paws to Read ® program is available at no charge to children in Grades 1 to 5. Over 300 children have enjoyed the opportunity to read to a TPOC Child Certified Therapy Dog In several libraries in the Halifax region.

In the Paws to Read ® program, each child has a series of one-on-one sessions where they read aloud to a Child Certified Therapy Dog. The dogs are evaluated and selected for their temperament, and are calm, gentle and good listeners. A certified handler accompanies the Therapy Dog, and will encourage the child as they read, and manages the interactions with the dog. The local library handles the program registration and prepared the selection of books appropriate to each child.

The Paws to Read ® program results in improvements in reading skills and enjoyment, and encourages regular library visits. It can provide helpful practice to children where English is not the first language in their home. It is particularly beneficial when a child is reading below grade level or does not appear to enjoy reading. The presence of the dog can provide strong motivation to participate.

Mark Grant will speak on Pet Therapy programs in general, and the results that have been achieved, particularly with children and youth and outline some of the science about the impact of Therapy Dogs to support the health and wellness of adults and youth, as well as literacy and reading support. Peggy Denman will speak on the Paws to Read ® program at local libraries, and the response from the community, and participant evaluations.

Plus two experienced Child Certified Therapy Dogs, Maiya and Colby, and their handlers will provide a demonstration of how the dogs interact with children.
